Andrew H. Tisch '71

Andrew Tisch

Chairman of the Executive Committee
Loews Corporation

Andrew Tisch '71 is chairman of the executive committee of Loews Corporation. Prior to that, he served as chairman and CEO of Lorillard, Inc. and as president of the Bulova Watch Company and Bulova Corporation. In addition to being a member of the board of directors of Loews Corporation, he serves on the boards of CNA Financial Corporation, Diamond Offshore Corporation, Texas Gas Transmission, LLC, Boardwalk Pipelines, LLC, and K12, Inc. (as chairman).

At Cornell, Tisch has been a member of the board of trustees since 2003 and is a vice chairman of the board. He also serves on the board's executive committee, and serves or has served on the committees on board membership (as chairman), academic affairs, student life, finance, and government relations. He has also served as vice chair of the university's campaign cabinet since 2006. Tisch is a longtime member of the School of Hotel Administration (SHA) Dean's Advisory Board and is also active with the Class of '71.

Tisch is a passionate supporter of Cornell faculty. Some of his most prominent gifts to Cornell have greatly enhanced the university's ability to attract and retain the very best faculty. In 2002, he and his brother James '75 established the Tisch Distinguished University Professorship, which was just appointed to Yervant Terzian (Astronomy Department). The professorship is awarded to a senior faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and research and who is nearing retirement, allowing the university to retain that person's talents while also "opening a line" for a new faculty member to be hired. Previously, the Tisch Distinguished University Professorship was held by Walter LaFeber and William B. Provine.

In 2008, Tisch and his wife Ann Rubenstein Tisch (a journalist and educator) made an extraordinary $35 million gift to create the Tisch University Professorships, which are intended to help the university recruit and retain talented young faculty at critical moments in their careers. There are currently two Tisch University Professors: Jon Kleinberg (computer science) and Geoffrey Coates (chemistry), two of the university's most accomplished scientists.

Andrew and Ann have also created the Ann and Andrew Tisch Scholarship, which gives preference to female undergraduates with financial need, and the Andrew H. and Ann R. Tisch Scholarship Fund at SHA. In 1992, the Tisch family made a substantial gift towards the renovation of the Statler Hotel, recognized by the naming of the Loews Lobby. Andrew has supported other initiatives at SHA and is a generous supporter of the President's Annual Fund, the Cornell Annual Fund, Athletics, and Hillel.

In addition to his generous financial support, Tisch also regularly hosts "power breakfasts" for Cornell at the Loews Regency Hotel in New York City. These breakfasts allow the university to feature its administrators and faculty in discussions about important Cornell initiatives, helping to raise awareness and build support.

Outside of Cornell, Tisch is involved in numerous other organizations, including the City Parks Foundation (of New York), the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the New York City Police Foundation. He is a co-chairman of the Dean's Council at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts and co-founder of the Young Women's Leadership Foundation, as well as a Trustee of the Brookings Institution. He is chairman of the Economic Club of New York and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
