Recommendations for Computer Purchases
The Hotel School offers access to over 130 Dell PC workstations in the Binenkorb Computing Center and the Nestlé Library, but students may find it difficult to access equipment during peak times when classes are in session and many assignments are due. For this reason most of our students choose to purchase their own computer.
Compatibility
The Hotel School's faculty relies exclusively on Dell PCs with Microsoft Windows operating systems. We strongly recommend selecting a Windows- based machine to avoid any compatibility issues, particularly related to class assignments.
Though new Apple computers are currently capable of running Windows, a dedicated Windows computer is still strongly recommended.
Laptop or Desktop?
Performance and cost are now very similar, so personal preference is key. Some students enjoy the ability to take their computers all over campus, benefiting from the extensive wireless networks that are in place at Cornell. Others find the smaller keyboards and differences in pointer devices an obstacle to productivity. Ultimately, students should purchase a computer comfortable for them, with the following minimum requirements:
| Hardware | Laptop | Desktop |
| Processor Speed (dual core) | 1.6 GHz | 2.4 GHz |
| Hard Drive | 60GB | 100GB |
| RAM | 1 GB Min, 2 GB preferred | 1 GB Min, 2 GB preferred |
| Monitor | 15" Active matrix | 17" Flat panel |
| Peripherals | CD/RW DVD/RW | CD/RW DVD/RW |
| Wireless Capability | 802.11a/b/g/n integrated | |
| Optional Enhancements | Thumb/USB drive & Printer | Thumb/USB drive & Printer |

Warranties
An easily overlooked but vital aspect of purchasing a new computer is the warranty that comes with it. Larger vendors, such as Dell, typically offer 4 year warranty plans that include parts and labor. In some cases they might cost a little extra at the time of purchase but can save a tremendous amount of money and time if parts fail.
- If you are purchasing a new computer we suggest that you select Microsoft Office 2007 for optimal compatibility.

Servicing your computer
Please note that the Hotel School does not provide support for either hardware or software issues for students, but there are many other Cornell-offered support options. For on campus technical support please visit the Computing Center's web page.
