A list of the top 75 Independents including fine dining, casual restaurants and pubs in Canada is presented. Data are taken from the ranking research from the Church & Dwight Co. Inc. (CHD), a leading research company and database management provider. The leading restaurants include the Restaurant Nuances and Hotel Des Seigneurs in Quebec Province, Casino Grill in Edmonton, Alberta, and Wild Coyote Club in Vancouver, British Columbia.

It provides a detailed brand-by-brand assessment and three-year performance comparison of individual organizations that have reached more than 41% of the $500 billion-plus consumer foodservice market. Several charts listing company rankings based on sales, revenues and number of chain units are also presented in the article.

Chapter 2 of the book "The 2007 Restaurant & Foodservice Market Research Handbook" is presented. Statistics are given on the top 400 U.S. restaurant chains. The rankings are accepted as the multi-unit restaurant industry's scorecard, charting the gains and losses of individual chains. It also indicates trends in chain expansion, consolidation and corporate strategic thinking. The top three in the list are McDonald's, KFC and Burger King.
5) "The Best Places to Open Your Next Restaurant. (Cover story)". Spencer, T.; Restaurant Business. Vol. 106, Iss. 11. Nov, 2007. p. 20.
The article discusses how to use the Restaurant Growth Index (RGI) to choose a place to open a new restaurant in the U.S. The RGI ranks U.S. metropolitan areas based on a formula identifying restaurant spending and gaps in spending per capita compared with the national average. To use the RGI, restaurateurs should look at the ranking and the size of the market to determine which metropolitan areas represent the best opportunity for the concept of the restaurant. The RGI score is calculated on an area's total restaurant sales and sales as a percentage of per capita income compared with the nation as a whole.

The article presents statistical information and percentage breakdown on the Top 400 restaurant chain brands based on core-menu type. 0.9% of the Top 400 total sales are of Asian cuisine. 33.7% of the Top 400 total sales are burgers while 8.1% are chicken. 2.1% are sales from cafeteria/buffet while 9.6% of the Top 400 total sales is attributed to casual dining.

A list of the top 100 independent restaurants, ranked by food-and-beverage revenue in 2006, in the U.S. is presented. The restaurant with the highest sales gains during the year is Tao Las Vegas Restaurant & Nightclub in Nevada, followed by Tavern on the Green in New York City and Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach, Florida. Data is given for average dinner check, number of meals served and availability of seats.
