Chapter 69 of the book "Consumer Behavior 2012 8th Edition" is presented. It identifies the top-ranked metropolitan centers in the U.S. It shows that the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose core-based statistical area as having the highest median household effective buying power. It lists Yuba City in California and El Centro in Florida as having the highest employment growth between 2010 and 2011. It also names Raleigh, North Carolina as the best place for business and career.

The article presents information on Raleigh, North Carolina, which has been ranked by Businessweek.com as the No. 1 city in the U.S. It is stated that Raleigh has reputed universities including North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The cities were ranked on the basis of the number of restaurants, bars, number of colleges, libraries, and professional sports teams; the income, poverty, unemployment, and crime.

The article reports on the results of the latest survey by employment services firm Manpowergroup on the best and worst cities for jobs in the U.S. as of September 2011. Based on the results, 16% expect to hire more staff during the fourth quarter of 2011, while 11% anticipate layoffs. The best place for jobs is San Antonio, Texas, with such employers as the U.S. Department of Defense and the United Services Automobile Association.

Tucson, Arizona enjoys good weather and has inexpensive housing. An accompanying map rates all 50 U.S. states according to their tax burdens.

The article offers information on the best places to live in the U.S. including Louisville, Colorado, Milton, Massachusetts, and Solon, Ohio. The winners are determined by population, median income and education, fiscal strength and ease-of-living criteria. An area's access to schools, recreation, and health care is also a factor. The economic stability, access to secure jobs, and a low crime rate also contribute to an area's appeal. Information on people and families living in the areas chosen are detailed.

The article focuses on Sandusky, Ohio which topped the 2011 "Forbes" list of America's Best Cheap Cities. Sandusky is described to be a city with water views and the most affordable housing market in the U.S. Several factors were considered in producing the list including crime rate, school quality and cost of living. The city's reported unemployment rate for June is attributable to Cedar Point Amusement Park seasonal hiring of 3,000 temporary workers.

In Des Moines, Iowa the median price of a house is $148,600. Provo, Utah's $15 billion economy benefits from the presence of Brigham Young University. Car maker Toyota Motor and printer manufacturer Lexmark International are among large companies that have established a presence in Lexington, Kentucky.

According to the author, Des Moines, Iowa is ranked first, with the city having a ratio of one big business for every 568 residents. He reveals that the area has attracted startups and established companies looking to relocate mainly because its business costs are 16 percent below the national average. He adds that Raleigh, North Carolina is ranked second, while Madison, Wisconsin is third.

It says that London in England keeps its top spot from the 2009 survey. It tells that the main factors considered by the companies in choosing business location include market access, staff availability, and transportation. It mentions other top 10 cities including Brussels in Belgium, Barcelona in Spain, and Munich in Bavaria.

As a writer, Ken McGoogan has more freedom in choosing where to live than a lot of Canadians. The author of seven non-fiction books has lived in every region of the country during his 64 years -- from east to west, including a jaunt up north. McGoogan eventually chose to settle in Toronto, where he has lived with his wife, Sheena, for the past nine years. To him, this is the best place to live in the country. McGoogan's opinion, controversial though it may be, is nevertheless well informed. Through all of his roaming, McGoogan has developed a good sense of what he wants from the city he calls home. Near the top of his list is access to a well-stocked library. Certainly one aspect is the weather. The catch is that housing is really only affordable if you're working in the first place. And in Timmins, that might not be the case.

The article focuses on cities in the U.S. considered as the best places for minority entrepreneurs. According to the author, Kauffman Foundation released data which shows that immigrants accounted for almost 30 percent of new business owners in the country as of 2010. He states that Atlanta, Georgia is the best U.S. metro area for minority entrepreneurs and is also the metro with the second highest percentage of minority business owners among cities with populations higher than one million.

The article reports on places in the U.S. that are considered best options for retirees. According to the author, the locations included in the "Forbes 2011 Retirement Guide" were chosen based on factors such as tax burden, cost of living, weather, availability of medical care and crime rates among others. He states that San Antonio, Texas made the list because of its low living costs, while states like Georgia and Montana are considered some of the best in terms of tax climates.

It says that the choices were based on factors such as diversity of industries, cost of living and size of companies. It gives reasons why Minneapolis is at the top of list, followed by Austin, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.

The article discusses the 2011 Restaurant Growth Index (RGI) annual report of The Nielsen Co. which ranks markets by identifying restaurant sales and gaps per capita in the U.S. Total restaurant sales have declined due to the slow recovering economy. The Crestview, Florida market is the at the top of the RGI list, followed by Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Ocean City, New Jersey. Vacation destinations and markets with high transient population are found to have high index scores.
