Game Dinner to the President |
On September 28, 1909, President William Howard Taft took an automobile and trolley ride to Hayden Lake in Idaho to have dinner at the Bozanta Tavern. The following day, the Washington Post reported that the President was served “bear meat, grouse, and wild duck and many other delicacies from the forests of Washington…” The Game Dinner to The President of the United States menu from the Oscar Tschirky Menu Collection presents a more accurate accounting of the fare that evening.
The President’s train arrived in Spokane at 6:00 AM. His schedule included a formal breakfast, a luncheon along with meetings with School children, veterans, and civic organizations in Spokane. After the banquet at the Bozanta Tavern, the President’s party returned to Spokane. We know that President Taft was accompanied on this trip by his aide Capt. Archie Butt and that he met with the Secretary for the Interior, Richard Ballinger, earlier in the morning. He left Spokane around 9:00 PM. The next stop on his trip was Seattle.
