Frequently Asked Questions

Who does the research for Hostline?

The professional reference librarians of the Nestlé Library. Jeff Shampnois is currently the Hostline Operations Manager, so you are most likely to deal with him.

Can you email that information to me?

Research reports and pdf copies of journal articles are usually sent as attachments to email.

Do you offer any discounts?

There are some discounts for Cornell Hotel School alumni. Hostline is a non-profit service. Our fees make it possible for people outside Cornell University to access the unique information resources at the Nestlé Library. The fees cover labor, copyright, and materials costs.

What can you give me for free?

Our Hospitality Links pages provide links to web resources for hospitality research that are free or open to the public that our librarians have organized and reviewed for quality of content.

The Cornell Center for Hospitality Research also provides access to their research reports (which requires only a cost-free, one-time-only registration).

Hostline always provides a free time-and-results estimate for your research topic. In other words, before you commit to any research project, we'll let you know the maximum amount of time your research is likely to take, and the kinds of information we're likely to find for you.

Where do you get your information?

In the print and database resources of the Nestlé Library, which supports the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. Resources include hospitality specific databases of the most significant industry and research journals, and excellent collection of current statistics, trends, and reports. We also have contacts with other information service providers as well as alumni.

If I come to your library, can I look at these resources for free?

Anyone who visits our library may use the materials in our collection. To check materials out, you must be a current member of the Cornell community or purchase a library card at Olin library on the Cornell campus.

I'm in a hurry, can I get that today?

Although you may get lucky on a given day with a small request, it is unlikely. The librarians who do the research have other duties in addition to as Hostline, and often have multiple Hostline clients to deal with each day. However, we do tend to have a rapid turnaround, so call us and ask!
