Editor's Welcome

J. Bruce Tracey

Editor, Cornell Hospitality QuarterlyJ. Bruce Tracey
Associate Professor, School of Hotel Administration

I am delighted to serve as the incoming editor of the Cornell Quarterly.  I would like to thank Linda Canina, the most recent CQ editor, for her support during this transition.  In addition, I’d like to thank Mike Sturman and Mike Lynn, former CQ editors, for their insights and assistance during my preparation for this endeavor.  And finally, I’d like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to Glenn Withiam and Melissa Carlisle for their willingness to continue in their roles on the editorial team as we transition to a new page in the history of this amazing journal.

As the CQ celebrates its 50th Anniversary, I am humbled and awed by the responsibility that lies before me.  Since its inception, CQ has had a significant impact on bridging academia and the hospitality industry.  In my almost 20 years at the Hotel School, I have read numerous articles that have addressed a myriad of operational and strategic challenges.  I have been impressed by the ways in which scholars and practitioners around the world have addressed these challenges and developed prescriptive explanations that have improved problem-solving and decision-making.  My primary – and sometimes daunting – role is to ensure that the CQ continues to publish research that is based on important, industry-specific concerns and examined using rigorous methods of inquiry so that we develop a deeper and more informed understanding of how to enhance individual, organizational, and industry excellence.

In order to build on the body work that has been published in the CQ over the past five decades, I urge scholars in all disciplines to work directly with industry practitioners to identify challenges that are not only relevant today, but will affect our industry for years to come.  In addition, I’d like to promote the use of multi-disciplinary explanations to enhance our understanding of – and developing prescription for – the most critical industry challenges.  And finally, I encourage efforts to conduct well-executed, applied research that can be generalized to people and contexts throughout the world.  If these efforts are realized, at least in part, then I am confident the CQ will continue to be the leading source of research-based knowledge about the hospitality industry.

I look forward to working with you to fulfill these ambitious, but critical objectives.
