Editor's Welcome
Linda Canina
Editor, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly
Associate Professor, School of Hotel Administration
I took over as the editor of Cornell Hospitality Quarterly as of July 1, 2006, and so far it has been an enriching academic experience for me. One of the roles of the editor and also of the reviewers is to educate. In that regard, our objective is to attract and publish the best manuscripts possible. However, an editor can publish only the work that she receives. As a result, I must actively solicit manuscripts and provide feedback that will improve those that are received.
Education works both ways, however. A CQ editor gets to read well over a hundred submissions a year, plus at least three reviews of each submission. This gives me the opportunity to learn as I read each submitted manuscript, to learn as I work to understand the expertise of the reviewers (so I can align their knowledge with the content of the submissions), and to learn from the resulting reviews as I determine whether the manuscript has the potential to make an interesting and important contribution. The manuscripts and the expertise of both the experienced industry practitioners and the academic reviewers cover a wide area of topics pertinent to the hospitality industry. Through this process, I learn about many new topics and also see how the same paper is viewed quite differently at times.
Finally, as manuscript authors consider the comments of reviewers, I believe that another learning process can take place. The authors will gain different perspectives on their work, perhaps with ideas for further research. Those of you who are reading this may right now be working on a manuscript that could become part of this two-way education process. I request that you consider sending your manuscript to me for possible inclusion in a future Cornell Hospitality Quarterly.
