Ithaca, N.Y., March 23, 2004 -- Nestlé R&D Center, Inc. has signed on as a senior partner with the Cornell Hotel School's Center for Hospitality Research in a major commitment to supporting research that aims to advance operating practices in the hospitality industry.

"We are very pleased to add the world's largest food and beverage company at this new level of sponsorship," said Gary Thompson, executive director of the Center. "This is further evidence that the Center is gaining significant traction in building a preeminent research organization that has the intellectual and financial resources to serve the needs of the entire hospitality industry."

Nestlé reported global sales exceeding $57 billion in 2002, driven by world-renowned brands such as NESCAFE® coffee, NESTEA®, STOUFFER'S®, PERRIER, POWERBAR®, CARNATION®, NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE®, , PURINA®, and HOT POCKETS®. The company operates seven research centers, nine product technology centers, and the Nestlé Research Center in Switzerland, where the company was founded in 1867.

Nestlé has a strong commitment to foodservice, an area that CHR will be exploring through research projects. "Foodservice is one of the fastest growing segments of the food industry," said Elaine Wedral, Ph.D., Vice-President of Nestlé Product Technology Center in New Milford, Connecticut. "Our foodservice customers are multi-leveled, from restaurant operators and hotel wholesale suppliers to end-users. Due to that complexity, consumer insight and research is critical to better understand our customers and their needs. We are therefore especially pleased to support Cornell's efforts to gather and share this valuable research data with our industry."
