  • Frank Meier meets Berry Wall | famoushotels.org

    Published: 2009-11-23 10:54:11

Back when cocktails were a serious part of life, a man named Frank Meier held sway over the bar at the Ritz in Paris. And when he wasn’t serving drinks to the grand and glorious he found time to write a book, The Artistry of Mixing Drinks, published in 1934. It is a rare volume indeed, having only three limited-edition printings. It is filled with around 300 alcoholic curiosities, many of them worth concocting again, if only for the amusement factor. And who knows? You might find a favourite and bring it back to life.

Hans Wiedemann believes in fate—how else could he explain all the coincidences that preceded his 2004 appointment as managing director of the legendary Badrutt’s Palace hotel? To him, the landmark property in idyllic St. Moritz, Switzerland, is the place the 2009 Independent Hotelier of the World was always meant to be. Relaxing in the hotel’s lavish Hans Badrutt Suite on the very September day his 19-year-old daughter, Rebecca, enrolled at his alma mater, École hôtelière de Lausanne, Wiedemann recalls the scene 13 years earlier.

During the interview for the Corporate Hotelier of the World award, 2009 honoree Sir Rocco Forte made several references to the importance of the highest standards of service. He referred to mentors like Giulio Gelardi, who ran London’s Savoy Hotel for Trusthouse Forte and taught an impressionable Forte about layout, staffing and organization. Forte also talked about just having returned from a memorial service for Bruno Rotti, longtime restaurant manager at Claridge’s, who Forte remembers as a meticulous professional, extremely elegant, cultured and having an incredible eye for detail. “Then you see some of the people running around today giving themselves a lot of credit and they know nothing in comparison—and it irritates me,” Forte says.
