    2009 has seen the worst recession since the 1930s, with global GDP contracting by an estimated 1.3%. While there are tentative signs that the economic cycle is now turning, driven by unprecedented policy stimuli, reviving credit markets and recovering asset prices, recovery is expected to be gradual - and a second dip into recession early next year cannot yet be ruled out.

  • UNWTO: Tourism Leaders call for Supportive Global Policies

    Around 80 Tourism Ministers meeting at the UNWTO Ministers’ Summit (10 November at World Travel Market, London) called for global policies that are supportive of the travel and tourism industry. Ministers recalled that tourism is one of the world’s top job creators and can be a key driver of recovery and the transformation towards the Green Economy. As the global economy still struggles, governments were requested not to impose extra burdens on travel, such as fiscal measures, and to maintain stimulus policies in support of tourism as this in turn will contribute to sustainable economic growth.

    Planning has begun for Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals' (HFTP®) 2010 European Hospitality Technology Educational Conference (EHTEC). The EHTEC Advisory Council, a group of global hospitality experts, is designing a program that tackles tough technology issues prominent in Europe. EHTEC 2010 is February 14-16 at the Amsterdam Hilton in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Registration is now available online.

  • Confidence in Tourism Sector Gradually picking Up | UNWTO reports

    The decline in international tourism may have started to bottom out, according to the latest edition of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals declined by 7% between January and August 2009, but the rate of decline has eased in the past few months. These results, as well as the most recent economic data, confirm UNWTO's initial forecast of a 5% decline in international tourist arrivals for the full year 2009. For 2010, UNWTO expects a moderate growth.
