  • Upper-upscale branded hotels’ operating expense trends | hotelnewsnow.com

    Hotels have been cutting back on operating expenses because of the current economic conditions, but how have the past years’ expenses trended versus revenue growth? This article explores the past three years’ upper-upscale branded hotels’ operating revenues and expenses. (Upper-upscale brands include such brands as Hilton, Marriott, Westin and Hyatt.) Using Smith Travel Research’s Hotel Operating Statistics Study (HOST) data, we sampled data from 575 U.S. upper-upscale, full-service hotels from 2006 through 2008. The average hotel size in this sample is 462 rooms.

    The latest edition of The Pegasus View is now available for your review. Overall, the report shows bookings and net revenue figures climbing back to 2008 levels, with positive movement in North America, which jumped +3.5% in corporate bookings volume in October 2009 compared to October 2008, and +21% in leisure bookings volume for the same period. The average daily rate for GDS transactions reached its highest point to date this year at $163. The report also shows booking lead times remain short in both corporate-driven GDS and leisure-driven ADS transactions.

    Despite the impact of the recession, the United States remains the world’s largest market for casino gaming. But revenues at casinos nationwide have slipped 7% in 2009, with Atlantic City and Las Vegas markets experiencing much bigger declines. Customer satisfaction with casinos across the US is also down in 2009 due to broad cuts in staff, service, and player reinvestment. However, based on a recent Market Metrix Casino Market Study, some casinos and regions are faring better.

    Sheraton Hotels & Resorts announced today the culmination of a $70 million renovation to the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Colorado’s largest hotel. Sheraton Denver’s extensive renovation is part of a $6 billion brand-wide global revitalization effort, which includes upgrading 100 hotels in the U.S., renovating 50,000 guest rooms and re-designing more than 100 new lobbies. To mark the celebration, Starwood CEO Frits van Paasschen will present a $5,000 contribution to Mayor John Hickenlooper to benefit Denver’s Road Home, whose mission is to end homelessness in the city.

    Middle East tourism is expected to more than double by 2020. Furthermore, the Arab world is still considered a hot spot among investors in the hospitality sector — but growth opportunities are no longer conceivable without considering the budget sector. Experts believe that luxury requires budget and Dubai, renowned for luxurious hotels such as Burj Al Arab, is leading the way. The emirate is beginning to realize that in order to lure more tourists, it needs to diversify its offerings especially in light of the financial downturn.
