Jan Schnabel joined Marsh USA, Inc. in May of 2000 as Vice President, Client Executive, for the Portland office. She was promoted a year later to National Hospitality Practice Leader, promoted in 2002 to Senior Vice President, and in 2004 to her current role as Managing Director, Global Hospitality Practice Leader. In addition to building and enhancing Marsh's Hospitality Practice, Jan's responsibilities include client development and service, and hospitality training and instruction.
Jan has achieved international acclaim for the work she has done in the hospitality industry. She has several years of experience in the hospitality field, specializing in the risk management and loss prevention aspects of the industry. She has developed hospitality-specific training programs and resources tailored to the industry and to her clients, which have been successfully embraced by hotels and restaurants across the country and abroad.
Jan joined Red Lion Hotels & Inn's corporate Risk Management Department in August 1993, where she managed the workers' compensation, safety, and security programs for 28 Red Lion-owned and -managed hotels. Her hotel industry risk-management experience continued with Doubletree Hotels following their acquisition of Red Lion Hotels in 1996, then with Promus Hotels (Red Lion, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inns, Homewood Suites) after their merger with Doubletree Hotels in 1997. From December of 1998 to May of 2000 she worked for Wausau Insurance Companies as the National Director of Loss Prevention Services prior to accepting her position with Marsh. She is currently pursuing her master's degree at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon.
Jan is a member of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), the National Restaurant Association (NRA), the National Ergonomics Council, Women In Foodservice Forum, and the American Society of Safety Engineers. She is a contributing author for a number of hospitality publications, a frequent speaker at national and international hospitality conferences and events, a guest lecturer for Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, and is a member of the Client Advisory Board for Cornell University's Center for Hospitality Research.
