How Can I Be a Successful Online Participant?

Our staff and instructors are committed to providing you with an engaging, supportive, and - above all - successful learning experience. But there are some steps you'll need to take yourself to make this happen. Successful online participants have given us this advice to share with participants who are new to the web-based learning environment:

  • Get To Know Your Resources
There are many people at eCornell who are ready to help you, including your mentor or instructor, your peers, student services, and tech support.
  • Get To Know Your Classmates
Introduce yourself to the class by completing your student homepage and writing an introductory message; read your classmates’ homepages to get a sense of who they are. We encourage you to send them e-mail, ask about an interesting hobby someone mentions, or make contact with someone whose company is related to yours. Once you’ve started an online conversation, it quickly becomes an easy and natural way to communicate.
  • Budget Your Time
Our courses vary in length from two to four weeks. Some students will take longer; others will complete the course in less time. Whether you can do course work only during the week, or can do it only on weekends or at particular times of the day, you should have ample time to complete course activities and take part in discussions. If you're concerned about the amount of time you’re spending on each module, check in with your mentor or instructor. He or she can help you work out the time-management approach that makes sense for you so you can complete the course work in the time frame during which the course runs.
  • Stay in Touch
Develop the habit of logging on regularly. For your convenience, we try to provide a great deal of material you can study without being connected to the course site or without being at your computer. Nonetheless, communication with your colleagues and with your mentor or instructor is at the heart of the learning experience.
  • Consult with Your Mentor or Instructor
Don’t hesitate to take a problem related to the course or program to your mentor or instructor. We can't help you unless we're aware of your difficulty.
