Mr. Robert M. Chase
Professor Emeritus

Robert Chase graduated from Cornell University with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. After employment with small business in New York City and with the ElectricBoat Division of General Dynamics, he accepted an invitation to join the Cornell faculty.

Professor Chase has been associated with the School of Hotel Administration since 1962. His course responsibilities involve property management, information systems, accounting, finance, and business strategy. In addition to teaching undergraduates, he has been active in the School's Professional Development Program (PDP). This program serves the needs of industry practitioners from around the world in multiple endeavors.

In 1966 Professor Chase undertook development of the first "management game" for hotel administration. The result of this effort was the Cornell Hotel Administration Simulation Exercise (CHASE). The reception and success of this novel educational instrument led to the development of a second exercise, the Cornell Restaurant Administration Simulation Exercise (CRASE). Both of these instruments have been under continuous revision since their inception and are now utilized at many schools, colleges, institutes and corporate organizations domestically and internationally.

In cooperation with Holiday Inns, Professor Chase and Mr. Mark Talbert extended their interests in 'discovery learning' with another management game. This exercise is a real time rooms management exercise named CHESS-I. Along with Professor Chris Muller, Mr. Chase's interest in this educational format developed the BMUSE, a brand management strategic exercise.

Presentations of these exercises has lead to long associations with Inter-Continental Hotels, Westin Hotels and Resorts, Hilton International, Dusit Thani Hotels, Hyatt and Holiday Inns*. In the food service sector Prof. Chase has conducted programs for the General Mills Restaurant Group*, McDonalds, Dunkin' Donuts, Howard Johnson, Marriott, Long John Silvers, The S&A Restaurant Group, and PepsiCo Restaurants International*.

*Although Holiday Inns is now Six Continents, PRI is now Tricon and General Mills Restaurants is Darden, the effectiveness of the instructional method continues with these groups.

Robert Chase has also produced executive development programs for numerous allied companies including AT&T, IBM, ITT, Prudential Insurance, NCR, American Express and many trade associations. Robert Chase has been active with a series of educational developments involving Native Americans under sponsorship of the Indian Management Association and the Kellogg Foundation.

Prof. Chase holds appointments as External Examiner for Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore and as Advisory Board Chairman for Distance Learning, The International Hotel Management School, Leura, Australia.
