Dr. Cathy A. Enz
Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr. Professor of Innovation and Dynamic Management

Dr. Cathy A. Enz is a full professor in strategy and holds The Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr. Professorship of Innovation and Dynamic Management at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, where she recently served as Associate Dean for Industry Research and Affairs. Dr. Enz received her Ph.D. from the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University. She has been on the faculty at Cornell since 1990, and previously was on the faculty of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Cathy has published over eighty journal articles, book chapters, and three books in the areas of strategic management and strategic human resources. Her research interests include competitive dynamics, innovation and change management, and human resource investment strategies. Dr. Enz is the recipient of both outstanding teaching and research awards. She was the recipient of the Cornell Center for Hospitality Research Industry Relevance award in 2006, 2007, and 2008 for her research on competitive pricing in hotels.

Dr Enz is the author of the textbook, Hospitality Strategic Management: Concepts and Cases, recently translated into Chinese. The second edition of this textbook was just released. Her co-authored book, American Lodging Excellence: The Key to Best Practices in the U.S. Lodging Industry, was the winner of the excellence award from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. This book represents the findings from a comprehensive study of best practices and features over 140 cases of excellence. Her research has been published in a wide variety of academic and hospitality journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, The Academy of Management Journal, The Journal of Service Research, The Journal of Travel Research, and The Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly. A fourth book, The Cornell Handbook of Applied Hospitality Strategy, is currently in development.

In 2008 eCornell launched the newly created online certificate program in strategic hospitality management designed by Dr. Enz to develop critical strategic leadership competencies in current and high-potential hospitality managers. The Hospitality Change Simulation, a learning tool for the introduction of effective change, is part of this online strategy certificate program.

Cathy teaches a university-wide course in innovation in addition to teaching courses in strategic management and competitive positioning. In addition to teaching graduates and undergraduates, she presents in numerous executive programs in Europe, Asia, and Central America. Dr. Enz consults extensively in North America and serves on the Board of Directors of two privately owned hospitality companies.

Prior to her academic activities Dr. Enz held several industry positions including strategy development analyst in the office of corporate research for a large insurance organization, and operations manager responsible for Midwestern United States customer service and logistics in the dietary food service division of a large U.S. health care corporation.
