Dean's Leadership Series

The Dean's Leadership Series provides a platform for academic and industry leaders to debate the pressing hospitality industry issues of the day. Since its launch in fall 2007, the series has hosted panel discussions in New York City, Washington, and Orlando.

5th Edition of the Dean's Leadership Series

A panel of industry experts addressed "Providing Customer Value: How to Survive as a Hospitality Business Today" in front of a sold-out crowd at the fifth edition of the Dean's Leadership Series (DLS) on Monday, November 9, 2009, at InterContinental The Barclay New York.

The audience of over 250 hospitality leaders included 18 corporate sponsors and 18 leading members of the industry press. It is the first edition of the DLS to be sold-out.

Panelists included:

Jeffery H. Boyd, JD ’81, President and CEO, priceline.com

Jeffery H. Boyd is President, Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of priceline.com, based in Norwalk, Connecticut.  He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York.

Mr. Boyd has been with priceline.com since January 2000, during which time he has served in various capacities, including Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary and Chief Operating Officer.  Prior to joining priceline.com, he held positions as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Oxford Health Plans, Inc. and as Assistant General Counsel of Lord Abbett & Co., an investment advisory firm.  He also practiced law with the Connecticut law firm of Robinson & Cole and with Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and Melbourne, Australia.

Mr. Boyd received his B.A. in Government from St. Lawrence University in 1978 and his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1981. 

Paul J. Brown, President, Global Brands and Commercial Services, Hilton Hotels Corporation

Paul Brown is Hilton Worldwide’s President of Global Brands and Commercial Services.  He is the company’s global leader for brand management, customer marketing, sales, reservations, revenue management and information technology.

Mr. Brown joined Hilton Worldwide in November 2008 and brings extensive experience to his role at Hilton. Most recently, he served as President of Expedia North America and of Expedia's Partner Services Group.  Prior to Expedia, Mr. Brown was a partner at McKinsey & Company. Based in London, he led the firm's global travel and hospitality practice and served clients in all sectors of the travel and hospitality business.

Mr. Brown also worked at InterContinental Hotels Group, where he served as Senior Vice President of Global Brand Services after his promotion from Vice President of Strategic Planning.

Mr. Brown holds a MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, a Masters in engineering management from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Tech. He serves on the board of directors of Borders Group, Inc. and Lanier Parking Systems, LLC.

Bill Carroll, PhD, Senior Lecturer, Cornell School of Hotel Administration

Bill Carroll is a senior lecturer at the School of Hotel Administration, where he teaches courses in economics, pricing and marketing distribution. He is also CEO of Marketing Economics, a consulting firm specializing in travel industry pricing, distribution, yield management and strategic planning. Carroll is also a Senior Analyst with PhoCusWright, Inc. a firm specializing in research and analysis for the online travel market.

Carroll has held a variety of senior executive positions in the travel industry. He was Division Vice President for Global Marketing Planning at Hertz, where he was responsible for global pricing, yield management, marketing information systems, and counter sales. Carroll later served as the Global Vice President for Reed Elsevier’s Travel Group. Prior to his work in the travel industry, he served as a member of the economics staff at AT&T where he was an expert witness before state regulatory bodies and prepared filings on pricing and forecasting with the Federal Communications Commission.

Carroll holds a B.A. degree in economics from Rutgers, an M.S. in labor studies from the University of Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in economics from Penn State.

Bill Glenn, President, Global Merchant Services, American Express

Bill Glenn is President of the Global Merchant Services business at American Express Company.  Global Merchant Services is a merchant acquirer, processor and marketing partner for the millions of merchants around the world who accept the American Express Card.  In 2007, the combined global Billed Business volume processed by the merchant network was $647 billion.

Mr. Glenn joined American Express in September 2002 as President of the merchant business in North America.  In 2007, he assumed worldwide responsibility for the merchant network.  And in 2008, he was appointed as an Executive Officer of the Company and member of the Operating Committee, responsible for setting American Express’ strategic direction and priorities. 

He holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Lehigh University and is a member of the board of trustees of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the U.S. Travel Association CEO Roundtable.

Stephen G. Haggerty ‘90, Executive V.P., Global Hyatt Corporation

Stephen Haggerty was appointed global head of real estate and development in May 2007. In this position, he is responsible for Hyatt’s worldwide development efforts for all lodging and timeshare brands.  In addition, he has responsibility for all asset management functions and related transactional activity on a worldwide basis.

With a diverse background, extensive industry experience and financial and strategic development expertise, Haggerty joined Hyatt from Marriott International, Inc. where he worked for 13 years most recently as senior vice president, international project finance and asset management for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, based in London. During his employment with Marriott, he was also senior vice president of global asset management and finance, and served in regional development positions and feasibility and market planning roles in Hong Kong and the U.S.

Haggerty initiated his hospitality career in 1990 when he joined HVS International as a lodging consultant, working at the company’s headquarters in the U.S. and later in London, assisting with the establishment of this group’s first international office.

Haggerty holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration.

Robert J. McCarthy 'PA, Group President, The Americas and Global Lodging Services,Marriott International, Inc.

Robert J. "Bob" McCarthy is group president of The Americas and Global Lodging Services, for Marriott International, Inc. Mr. McCarthy's specific responsibilities include the financial management and leadership of 2800 hotels in The Americas spanning multiple lodging segments, twelve lodging brands, and a work force of 120,000 associates.

Mr. McCarthy’s role in Global Lodging Services includes oversight for support services to Marriott’s continental organizations around the globe.  His responsibilities include all areas of sales and marketing and operations.  In addition, duties encompass brand management and brand strategy for Marriott’s lodging portfolio including consumer research.

He is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at both the Villanova University School of Business and the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. He serves as a board member of the Autism Learning Center as well as the ServiceSource Foundation, an organization supporting people with disabilities.

Mr. McCarthy has over 30 years experience with Marriott, holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Villanova University in Villanova, PA., and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of Business.

Rohit Verma, PhD, Executive Director, Center for Hospitality Research and Professor, Cornell School of Hotel Administration

Rohit Verma is a Professor of Service Operations Management at the School of Hotel Administration, and also serves as the Executive Director for the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR). Prior to joining Cornell faculty, he was the George Eccles Professor of Management, David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. He has taught MBA and executive development classes at several universities around the world including DePaul University, Chicago, IL, University of Sydney, Australia, Norwegian School of Logistics, Norway, Helsinki School of Economics, Finland, and Indian School of Business, India.

His research interests include new product/service design, quality management and process improvement, and operations/marketing interrelated issues. He has published over 50 articles in prestigious business journals such as California Management Review, the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Service Research, MIT Sloan Management Review, Production and Operations Management, and other journals.

Verma has received several teaching and research awards including the "Skinner Award For Early Career Research Accomplishments" from the Production and Operations Management Society; "Spirit of Inquiry Award" the highest honor for scholarly activities within DePaul University; “Teaching Innovation Award” DePaul University; and “Doctoral faculty Teaching Award” University of Utah. He serves as the academic editor of the CHR’s managerial report series; associate editor of Journal of Operations Management, and Decision Sciences; senior editor of Production and Operations Management; and editorial board member of Journal of Service Research, and the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly.
