Real Estate Education

Real estate education is a primary focus of the Center for Real Estate and Finance. CREF is home to a world class real estate faculty who take pride in a real estate curriculum that is academically rigorous and intimately tied to industry practice. Cornell University is at the forefront of knowledge in commercial real estate and real estate finance, preparing students for a rewarding career.

The Minor in Real Estate - CREF offers a Real Estate Minor to all undergraduates at Cornell University. This six-course (18 credit hour) program offers a unique opportunity for Cornell students to prepare themselves for a career in commercial real estate. The minor focuses on careers as a real estate investor, in real estate finance, in real estate consulting, in structured finance, and in real estate transaction support.

Cornell Real Estate Club – The Cornell Club for Real Estate serves undergraduate students in the Minor in Real Estate. The Club provides a focus to build relationships with the industry, gain exposure to the industry, and deepen students’ knowledge of real estate.

Real Estate Competition – With the support of numerous corporate sponsors, the Center for Real Estate and Finance hosts an annual undergraduate real estate competition. Teams of students are given the case of a real estate transaction and must analyze the transaction and present their recommendations to a team of judges drawn from the real estate and finance industry. The winning team wins a substantial prize. Recent competitions have been hosted by TIAA-CREF at its headquarters in New York City.

Carnelian Fund  – As part of HA6667 – Investment in Real Estate Securities and Funds, students will manage the transition of the course’s hedge fund from a “shadow money” fund to a “real money” fund.  The Carnelian Fund is a living teaching and knowledge laboratory for students in CREF courses.

Real Estate Career Day – Each year, Career Management in the Office of Student Services, working with CREF, hosts a Real Estate Career Day. During this event, company representatives come to campus to meet with students, provide information about their companies, and answer questions regarding potential summer and permanent positions.
