Financing Opportunities - Singapore

We urge all students to investigate possible sources of financial aid including loans and outside grants. Some students have received support from their employers in exchange for agreeing to return to work for a specified amount of time. Chambers of Commerce, Fulbright offices, government agencies, trade associations, and foundations are other possible sources of funding.

The following scholarship opportunities are available for students applying to the Singapore campus:

Singapore Tourism Board (STB) Scholarship

The Singapore Tourism Board provides merit based scholarships for selected Master of Management in Hospitality students at the Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management.

Eligibility
Open to all students who have gained admittance to the CNI MMH program. There is no restriction on nationality or background.  Recipients of other scholarships or bursaries are not eligible to apply.

Quantum
The value of each scholarship award is S$70,000.

Selection Criteria
Scholarships will be awarded on merit.  Applications will be reviewed on the following criteria – work experience, academic qualifications, GMAT score, essays and interview.

Bond
Upon completion of the MMH program, recipients of the STB Scholarship for CNI are required to work in Singapore for any tourism and hospitality-related company on a full-time basis for a minimum period of three years.

Application
Submit your STB Scholarship Application due by January 15, 2010 to be considered for the 2010-2011 academic year.

The STB scholarship fund accepts contributions from corporate or individual donors so that more students can benefit from a scholarship. Companies or donors who are interested in offering a scholarship can also offer a joint scholarship with co-funding from the STB Scholarship fund. ASEAN Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship is open to nationals of member countries of ASEAN* (except Singapore) to pursue a designated full-time Masters degree by coursework or dissertation at NTU. Students applying for the Master of Management in Hospitality program can apply for the ASEAN Graduate Scholarship, provide they meet the eligibility criteria. This scholarship is applicable only to the six months that the students will spend with the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

* ASEAN or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations consists of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Eligibility criteria

  • Excellent academic record
  • A very good command of the English language
  • At least 2 years of working experience
  • An acceptable score in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
  • You should not be on paid employment or accept paid employment or concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary or top-up allowance during the prescribed period of the award
  • Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents are not eligible to apply

Bond
There is no bond attached to the scholarship. No deferment of scholarship awarded will be allowed. Awards that are not taken up will be given to other qualified candidates.

 Each scholarship shall cover the following:

  • Monthly stipend of S$1,350.00 (for the six months duration that the students spend in NTU, the amount is pro-rated depending on the exact date)
  • One-time book allowance of S$500.00
  • Six (6) months tuition fee in NTU
  • Health insurance, examination fee and other approved fees, allowances and expenses (For the six months duration at NTU)
  • Cost of travel from home country to Singapore on award of the scholarship
  • Cost of travel from Singapore to home country on successful completion of the Masters degree within the tenable period of the scholarship

Application
Applications for the ASEAN Scholarship will open in November 2009 and close in December 2009 for admission to the 2010 MMH intake in May. The outcome of the application will be released between end March 2010 and beginning April 2010 via email or post.

HYK Scholarship

The HYK Scholarship, donated by Ho Yeow Koon & Sons (Pte. Ltd.) is a need based bursary  that can be applied towards the MMH tuition fee at the Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management (CNI).

Eligibility
This is a need based scholarship open to all applicants who have accepted into the MMH program at CNI.

Quantum
The value of each scholarship award is SGD$78,000.

Selection Criteria
Candidates are selected based on their financial circumstances, academic achievements, strong GMAT and TOEFL/IELTS (where applicable) scores, essays,  personal and leadership attributes, and interview.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed and selected by the CNI Scholarship Selection Committee and a representative from the Donor.

Recipients of the HYK Scholarship may not hold other award(s) concurrently for the CNI MMH Program.

Taj Scholarship

The Taj Group of Hotels, India’s leading hospitality chain has a diverse range of magnificent hotel properties. The Hotel Chain, consisting of a fine array of resorts and palaces is a pioneer in legendary hospitality services. The Taj Group of Hotels, consisting of The Indian Hotels Company Limited, other associates, subsidiaries and joint venture companies, is part of the Tata Group, one of the largest Indian conglomerates. The Tata Group is highly reputed for its employment practices and globally recognized as a business house that practices the highest standards of ethics and values.

Over the last two years, the Taj has offered some of its brightest young executives a scholarship opportunity for the Masters of Management in Hospitality (MMH).  This year the Taj is again pleased to offer a fully paid scholarship valued at USD$75,000 for the Cornell Masters of Management in Hospitality (MMH) 2010-11.

Quantum
Scholarship valued at USD$75,000.  The recipients of the scholarship will execute a service bond with the Indian Hotels Company Ltd., to serve the Taj for a minimum period of three years, after their completing the MMH degree, and induction into the company in a suitable role with suitable responsibilities.

Criteria
Executives in grades E4-E6 who have completed at least 3 years of service (post training) as on 1st July, 2009 are eligible for this scholarship.

Those interested should apply directly to CNI using the online application form and submitting all required documents such as resume, academic transcripts, GMAT & TOEFL Scores, Essays and Recommendation letters.

Spring Management Development Scholarship


SPRING Singapore is the enterprise development agency for growing innovative companies and fostering a competitive SME sector. The Management Development Scholarship aims to raise up the next generation of leaders for the trailblazer companies of tomorrow. Through a co-funding scholarship arrangement to pursue renowned graduate business programs at leading local universities, MDS brings together the potent combination of promising young executives who have high leadership potential and dynamic, high-growth SMEs.

Quantum
SPRING Singapore will provide grant value of up to 70% of expenses which includes tuition fees, basic stipend and other related expenses, including monthly allowance for full-time MMH scholars. The remaining costs are borne by the sponsoring SME.

Criteria

For Individuals
You can apply for the Management Development Scholarship if you:

  • are currently working in an SME or are interested in joining one
  • are a citizen or permanent resident of Singapore
  • have 3 to 8 years of working experience

You will need to :

  • apply to a recognized academic program (The MMH program is recognized)
  • seek an SME to participate as a Sponsor Company, before embarking on the program
  • serve a 3 month internship in the SME prior to embarking on the approved course if you are a new recruit.  Performance must be deemed satisfactory by the SME
  • serve a bond of up to 2 years in the SME upon completion of your studies

For SMEs

You can develop existing young managers in your company or attract new talent through the Management Development Scholarship if your company meets the following criteria :

  • At least 30% local shareholding, group fixed assets below S$15 million
  • Less than 200 employees (for companies in the services sector)
  • Shows good company growth potential
  • Offers good opportunities for career development and advancement
  • Fulfills criteria (A) and (B),  OR  (A) and (C) :

    (A) Size and growth

    1. At least S$10 million in annual sales turnover*, or
    2. At least S$5 million in annual sales turnover* and company growth exceeding industry average, or
    3. At least 50 staff and company growth exceeding industry average


(B) Markets

    1. Revenue from overseas markets, including sales from non-domestic sources, foreign exports, or sales bound overseas via local intermediary


(C) Operations

    1. Investments in foreign operations, or
    2. Multiple establishments**

* Turnover to include only value added products and services
** Examples of establishments include outlets, factories, facilities

Cornell-Nanyang Scholarship

The Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management offers one time scholarship for matriculated MMH students at the CNI campus. The scholarship is applicable only towards the living and travel expense during the program.

Eligibility
Open to all students who have gained admittance to the CNI MMH program. There is no restriction on nationality or background. The recipient of this scholarship must not concurrently hold scholarships or bursaries from other donor companies for the academic year.

Quantum
The value of CNI Scholarship is SGD$37, 750.

Selection Criteria

Candidates are appraised on their academic achievements, personal attributes, and career track record. Applicants must have gained acceptance to the MMH Program and be medically fit to pursue the course and future employment in the lodging industry.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed and selected by the CNI Scholarship Selection Committee. Recipients of the Cornell-Nanyang Scholarship may not hold other award(s) concurrently for the CNI MMH Program.

Applications for the Cornell-Nanyang Scholarship are due by January 15, 2010 to be considered for the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Paras Education Foundation (TPEF)

The Paras Education Foundation (TPEF) is a financial consultancy, helping all international students obtain student loans for study in over 6000 Universities / Colleges / Schools like USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and more.

Eligibility
All international students, regardless of their country of origin or their nationality are eligible for the soft term study abroad loans.

Loan limit is based on tuition fees + living + food expenses + book expenses + Computer/Laptop + Health Insurance + Miscellaneous expense. (Up to US$65,000 per Co-Signor)

Interest rates at 6.5% p.a. approx

Repayment begins 6 months after graduation

Federal Loans for US Citizens and Permanent Residents

 

Cornell University has been designated a direct lender by the U.S. government, which facilitates the loan application processing for students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Common sources of financial support include the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), G.I. Bill assistance, William D. Cornell-Nanyang Need-Based Loans

The Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management offers limited need based loans for MMH students. It is assumed that the CNI students will have exhausted all possible sources of finance before the need-based loans are awarded.  The need based loans are applicable only towards the MMH tuition fee.

Eligibility

Open to admitted CNI MMH students who require financial assistance for their tuition fee and have exhausted all other possibilities of financial aid.

 

Selection Criteria
These are limited need based loans given to admitted CNI candidates who are unable to find any other sources of finance.

Quantum

The maximum loan amount granted is SGD 30,000 per student and awarded to limited number of matriculated MMH students at the CNI campus.

The disbursement of the loan is subject to the execution of the CNI Loan agreement. Once CNI Loan Fund Agreement has been executed, the students are irrevocably bound by the terms and the Loan Fund Agreement and may not accept any other scholarship or financial assistance, unless with the written approval of CNI.

 

Repayment

The first installment to be paid on the 1st day of the first month after the expiry of three (3) calendar months from the date of graduation. Subject to a minimum monthly installment of S$500 and a maximum Period of Repayment as set out in the loan agreement.
