MMH
FAQ
+ Is the MMH offered online?
No. However, we do offer online certificates and non-degree programs that are separate from the MMH degree through the Office of Executive and Professional Education.
+ Do I have to choose either the Ithaca campus or the Singapore campus, or can I study at both locations?
Although you apply to one program, students who choose the Ithaca campus on their application will be at Cornell for the entire 12 months. Students who indicate the Singapore option will be at the Cornell-Nanyang Institute for six months and at Cornell for six months.
+ If I choose the Singapore option, do I get the MMH degree from Cornell University or Nanyang Technological University?
Your diploma will be granted by both Cornell University and Nanyang Technological University. The diploma will have the seals of and will be signed by the presidents of both universities.
+ How long is the MMH program?
The MMH is a 12-month, three-semester program beginning in May. This intensive schedule is designed to address the needs and timelines of both the industry and the students.
+ Is a minimum GMAT score required?
Over the past three years, the average score of successful applicants on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score was higher than 630.
+ How does the MMH differ from an MBA?
The MMH degree program offers the business-management curriculum you'll find in a typical MBA program, but with an exclusive focus on the hospitality and services industries. Class discussions, projects, and case studies apply to hospitality, first and foremost.
The MMH degree is accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - which certifies the world's foremost schools and colleges of business.
+ Does my undergraduate degree have to be in hotel management?
No. Your undergraduate degree can be in any field, provided your grade-point average is high (the average undergraduate G.P.A. for admitted MMH students has been 3.3.) In fact, only a small number of MMH students studied hospitality as an undergraduate - most students come into the program with social science or traditional business degrees.
+ Are there prerequisites for enrolling in the program?
No prerequisite coursework is required to apply. Once you've been admitted into the program, you'll register for three online precourses. These must be successfully completed before you begin the on-campus core courses and Career Track electives.
+ Is work experience necessary?
It's not required, but it is preferred. We look for candidates with strong supervisory or managerial skills and leadership potential. Students admitted in the past few years have typically had three years of work experience.
+ Is it possible to have a part-time job while completing the MMH?
The MMH program is intensive, and will require full attention to your studies. Teaching assistantships may be available to particularly well-qualified candidates. We do not recommend off-campus work during the program.
+ May I enroll in courses outside the MMH program?
Yes. You may take elective courses in other schools or colleges on the campuses of both Cornell University and Nanyang Technological University, provided your advisor approves your schedule and the course has openings available.
+ May I transfer graduate-level credits from other institutions to the MMH program?
No. All students complete the MMH curriculum through Cornell and/or through the Cornell-Nanyang Institute.
+ Based on work experience or previous academic work, may I be exempted from certain application requirements or required courses?
No. We do not make exceptions for the application requirements or the core curriculum.
+ Where are students in the MMH program from?
The MMH program includes students from all over the world. Students in the Class of 2008 are from 16 different countries.
+ Is Visa assistance offered for international students?
Yes. The International Students and Scholars Office at Cornell University assists students enrolling in the Ithaca Campus and the International Student Centre at Nanyang Technological University assists students enrolling in the Singapore Campus. International students admitted to the Singapore Campus will need visas for both Singapore and the United States.
+ Is financial assistance available?
Yes. The Singapore and Ithaca campus options have their own distinct financial aid opportunities.
+ Where will I live while in school?
Graduate student housing is available on and off campus within walking, biking, or a bus ride's distance from both the Ithaca and Singapore campuses.
+ When are applications due?
Because the MMH Program begins in May each year, our selection process concludes earlier than most other graduate programs.
Deadlines vary depending on your campus choice: Ithaca or Singapore. You must complete your application and a personal interview before an application deadline in order to receive an admission decision by the corresponding notification date.
