Information Science

Advisors: P. Clark, E. Wagner

Information Science is an interdisciplinary field covering all aspects of digital information. The Concentration/Minor in Information Science is offered in every undergraduate college at Cornell. Because of small differences in regulations between the colleges, there are sometimes slight variations in the requirements depending on your college  and, in a few cases, your major.

The program has three main areas:

  • human-centered systems
  • information systems
  • social systems

Human-centered systems studies the relationship between humans and information, drawing from human-computer interaction and cognitive science.

Information systems studies the computer science problems of representing, storing, manipulating, and using digital information.

Social systems examines information in its economic, legal, political, cultural, and social contexts.

This concentration has been designed to ensure that students have grounding in all three of these areas, as well as in statistics.

The requirements for the undergraduate concentration/minor are listed below.  All courses must be chosen from the lists provided.  In addition, a letter grade of C or better is required; S/U courses are not allowed.

All students interested in pursuing the IS concentration must contact the IS program by e-mailing minor@infosci.cornell.edu with their name, college, year of study (e.g. 2nd semester sophomore), expected graduation date, and (intended) major.

To fulfill the concentration in IS, students must take:

  1. Statistics: H ADM 2201 Hospitality Quantitative Analysis
  2. One course in Human-Centered Systems
  3. One course in Information Systems
  4. One course in Social Systems
  5. H ADM 3374 Fundamentals of Database Management and Data Analysis
  6. H ADM 4474 Strategic Information Systems
  7. H ADM 4476 Visual Basic for Applications: End-User Programming
