Management Internship Program (MIP)
The Management Intern Program (MIP) is a six -to eight-month, work-study program for third- and fourth-year students who have completed required course work. The primary objective of the program is to give Hotel School students a challenging work environment and the opportunity to apply classroom lessons to real-world management situations.
Benefits
The internship experience fosters initiative, ambition, educational development, and personal growth. In addition, students:
- experience the culture and philosophy of a particular organization
- gain significant practical experience in an industry segment of interest
- receive 1 unit of required Practice Credit (practical experience)
- receive 12 academic credits
Requirements
Although there are academic requirements, the internship is designed to be flexible enough to meet the specific interests of the student and the needs of the sponsoring employer. Exact timing of the internship is up to the employer and student, but the internship must:
- be at least 24 weeks long
- be during either the fall or spring semester (not both)
- include a summer
Students must:
- Be in good academic standing, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and have two recommendations from faculty members;
- Have completed four semesters of study in the School of Hotel Administration;
- Have processed required Practice Credit to date (at least 1 full unit of 400 hours);
- Receive approval from the faculty at large and MIP Career Management administrators. The application process begins the semester before the internship.
Finding out about the MIP
Students must apply to the program one semester before the desired internship period begins.
At the beginning of each semester, Career Management hosts a mandatory information session for all prospective MIP candidates. For more information, contact Career Management staff in the Office of Student Services, 180 Statler Hall, 255.6376.
Tuition and Fees
If you are accepted for an off-campus internship, you pay 75 percent of full Cornell tuition and 100 percent of Cornell's administrative fees during the internship. Local interns have the option of enrolling for up to an additional 4 credits of course work. They must petition to take any amount beyond these 4 credits. Interns whose petitions are approved will be liable for the full amount of tuition.
Internships administered by other colleges or universities are not transferable to Cornell.
