Statler News
November 20 - December 4
Greetings From The Dean
Dear Friends,
This week I have the pleasure of welcoming Rosalyn Mallet to campus as the DDLS lecturer. Ms. Mallet is CEO and president of PhaseNext Hospitality, LLC, a franchise operating company that focuses on bringing fresh, high quality casual restaurant brands to non-traditional locations. During her 30-year career in the hospitality industry, she has held leadership positions at Caribou Coffee Company, Inc., la Madeline French Bakery, Carlson Companies, Carlson Restaurants, and Applebee’s International. Ms. Mallet is the treasurer of the National Restaurant Association Board of Directors, and she also serves on the boards of Share Our Strength, a national organization that is working to end childhood hunger in America, and People Report, a consulting firm that specializes in human resource consulting and recruiting for the hospitality industry. I invite you to find a seat in the balcony of Statler Auditorium for today’s 1:25 p.m. lecture.
Last week’s first annual Cornell Real Estate Case Competition was a great success. I want to extend my congratulations to the Cornell team of Josh Barvin A&S ’10, Andrew Gindy ’11, Taylor Quan ’10, Zied Sanhaji ’10, Amy Shyr ’10, and Li Zhang ’10 who won first place over teams from American University, Indiana University, New York University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Connecticut, and University of Texas at Austin. Their analysis on the case study was intelligent and innovative, and their presentation was well organized. Judy Brownell, dean of students, and Dan Quan, professor, did a great job co-coaching the team. I also want to recognize Professor Quan for bringing together an excellent panel of judges and Peng-Wei Tan ’07 of Apollo Real Estate Advisors for writing the complex case study, as well as Assistant Professor Daniel Lebret, Professor Crocker Liu, Ellen Brown ’88, and Phil Greenberg MBA ’05 for their help with the competition.
The third annual HA 4404 Charity Auction will be held in the Beck Center tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. The students in Catering and Special Events Management have planned a special event, and senior lecturer Rupert Spies reports that a variety of terrific items will be available during both the silent and live auctions. The proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Meals on Wheels of Ithaca, the Keith O’Donnell Scholarship fund, and Hotelies with a Heart. For more information, visit the auction website at http://cornellsha.maestroweb.com/.
The school’s inaugural Annual Report arrived hot off the press a few weeks ago, and I am happy to announce that it is now available online. It is a delight to see all of the accomplishments of 2008-2009 academic year in one publication. Despite economic challenges throughout the world, the hospitality industry, Cornell, and SHA, we were able to introduce a new minor in real estate, raise over $12.8 million in new gifts and commitments, start the Tower construction project, honor our first Icon of the Industry, and continue to perfect established traditions such as HEC, the Leadership Development Program, and the Guest Chef Series—and this list just scratches the surface. I’d like to recognize Nancy Knowles, director of communication strategy, and Jeannie Griffith, senior staff writer, for their hard work on this project, as well as everyone from the school and hotel who contributed content, statistics, and information for the Annual Report.
Finally, while I was attending a global gaming expo last week in Las Vegas, I had the pleasure of talking about hospitality education and the School of Hotel Administration on KNPR, Nevada Public Radio. The interview is posted on the school’s website.
Remember that SHA will be closed next Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, for Thanksgiving break. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend. Statler News will resume on December 5.
Sincerely,
Michael D. Johnson
