Greetings From The Dean
Dear Friends,
After 42 years as a member of the SHA faculty, Professor Richard H. “Dick” Penner will be retiring this year. Prof. Penner has been an exemplary educator, and he received a Ted Teng ’79 Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2011. His service extends well beyond the classroom. From 2005 to 2008, he served as the Richard J. and Monene P. Bradley Director of Graduate Studies, leading our MMH program through a successful AACSB review. He has regularly chaired Hospitality Design Roundtables sponsored by the Center for Hospitality Research. He has also employed his planning and design skills to better Cornell’s campus facilities, serving as chairman of committees on campus planning, parking and transportation, residence life, and student unions, and he chaired the university faculty advisory board on study abroad. During his academic career, Prof. Penner has authored three books and numerous articles and book chapters. In 1992, he was honored by Hospitality Design magazine with its Platinum Circle Award for his contributions to hospitality design as an author and teacher. All faculty and staff are invited to a reception in honor of Prof. Penner on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Park Atrium.
Cornell Days wrapped up last week, and I would like to thank the Hotel School Ambassadors for their efforts as we welcomed more than 70 newly admitted students and their families. Each day of Cornell Days, the Ambassadors conducted tours, hosted an informational luncheon, shared stories about their student experience, and answered questions to help our visitors learn more about the school.
We also had a very successful Diversity Hosting program this year, welcoming more than 20 students from across the country. Thank you to the faculty, staff and the students who served as hosts and provided our guests with a true Hotelie experience during their stay on campus. In related news, CU IMAGE, a campus-wide student organization that works to increase the admission and enrollment of minority students, held a competition to measure student volunteers’ participation in Diversity Hosting Month. I am happy to report that Briana Gaskin ’15 earned second place for her hard work as a host.
Fencing has been installed at the corner of East Avenue and Campus Road, print materials have been moved from Nestlé Library to Catherwood Library in Ives Hall, and work on the new Marriott Student Learning Center is officially underway. All library services will still be available throughout the final exam period and the summer session. The temporary locations for library services are listed below.
Another academic year is nearing a close. I wish everyone an enjoyable and safe Slope Day and best wishes for success as you prepare for final exams, projects, and papers.
Sincerely,
Michael D. Johnson
Dean & E.M. Statler Professor

Register in the World Atrium, Statler Hall, Monday, April 30 – Thursday, May 3
This charity event is to help both Brian Lo's family and EGBOK Mission. Brian Lo '11 was a student in the hotel school who was always known for smiling and working in the Bin labs. He, unfortunately, passed away a couple of weeks before graduating last year and his family is still paying off non-University affiliated student loans. Half of the proceeds will be going to his family to help them pay off the rest of the loan. The other half of the proceeds will go to EGBOK Mission, a not-for-profit organization in Cambodia, founded by Ben Justus '08. The purpose of the organization is to help underprivileged young adults, mainly orphans, to achieve their employment goals in the hospitality industry in Cambodia. If you are interested in participating, please stop by the World Atrium where there will be a table to register for the event! Come show your support for these great causes!

Announcements
Marriott Student Learning Center
The renovations of the Marriott Student Learning Center have officially begun. Books, reference material, magazines, and journals have been relocated from the Nestlé Library to ILR’s Catherwood Library. Course reserves and laptops will continue to circulate from the Nestlé Library for the remainder of this week. Fencing will soon be placed on the west side of Statler Hall, in front of the library windows, as this area will be used for construction staging.
It’s important to remember that all library services will be available through the end of the exam period (as well as throughout the summer). Starting on Slope Day, some services will be found in different locations:
- Library research staff will be temporarily located in Rooms 290, 292, and 294 in Statler Hall. We are available to help with any research needs, either in-person or by email. The Bloomberg and CoStar terminals will be located in Room 293.
- Circulation operations (course reserves, laptops) will move to the student lounge and will be available normal library hours until the end of the exam period.
- Room 341 will be reserved as a quiet study space.
- Public computers will be moved to Room 351.
We apologize for any inconvenience these moves may cause, and ask that you please bear with us as we begin the process of creating the fabulous new space that will house the Marriott Student Learning Center.
