Meet Geoff Gray ’08, The Statler Hotel’s Student Director of Operations

As the Student Director of Operations, it is my pleasure to be at your service. I am a senior focusing on Hotel & Resort Operations and a member of the Statler Leadership Development Program (SLDP). When I’m not enjoying the beautiful Ithaca scenery, I am proud to call San Diego my home. My passion for the hospitality industry is what drew me to the Hotel School; the opportunity to work with other passionate individuals is what gets me excited to come to school and work every day.
SLDP allows students to work toward a managerial position within the hotel. I have served as a front office supervisor, front office manager, and now, as the student Director of Operations. In my leadership role, I work closely with The Statler Hotel's executive committee to oversee the operations of the entire hotel. As the student voice on the executive committee, I am able to add another perspective to the decision making process and ensure that the Hotel's vision and strategy is aligned with the students’ expectations.
The opportunity to work at The Statler has allowed me to gain valuable experience prior to entering the workforce. I have had opportunities to manage a team, respond to emergencies, and be responsible for forecasting and budgeting.
In addition to my duties at the hotel, I serve as the Managing Director for the 83rd Annual Hotel Ezra Cornell, to be held April 2008. HEC is a weekend educational conference planned, hosted, and executed by students. Every year in early April, students take over The Statler Hotel and the Hotel School, and host industry executives, alumni, and various dignitaries at this three-day educational conference known as "The Summit of Hospitality Education."
Throughout the next year, I will be working toward becoming the first-ever Student General Manager for The Statler Hotel. Looking five years down the road, I aspire to pursue a career in hospitality leadership, specifically hotel & resort operations and development, and to continually develop my passion for this fascinating industry.
